Buying online: what your electrician needs to know

Planning a smart home for a new build? Use our smart home planning checklist before rough-in to prepare the product and installation brief with your builder and electrician before walls are closed.

  • Licensed electrician. In Australia, mains wiring work must be done by a licensed electrician. Order the switches online and have your own electrician fit them, or book our team if you are in Melbourne.
  • Neutral wire. The StellarTrack Matter switch needs a neutral at the switch. Older homes often have only active and switched-active wires at the switch, so ask your electrician to check before you order.
  • Wall box. StellarTrack switches are designed for Australian wiring and standard wall boxes. Terminals are L, L1-L3, N and PE (see the manual on the product page).
  • Load. Up to 200 W of LED lighting per circuit (400 W incandescent).

Smart Switches FAQ

Does the smart light switch still work like a normal wall switch?

Wall-button behaviour depends on the selected model and how it is configured. In a switching mode, a button can control its connected light circuit. In a scene or decoupled mode, the button may trigger an automation instead. Confirm the intended behaviour with your installer, especially for buttons used by guests or family members.

Can one switch be added to more than one smart home platform?

Matter supports multi-platform control in many setups. For example, a household may use Apple Home as the main platform while also allowing another family member to access selected devices through another compatible Matter ecosystem. The final setup depends on the household's chosen platforms, hubs and account permissions.

Will the switch still work if my internet goes down?

An internet outage is different from a power outage. Local control may continue when the switch, its network and the required controllers remain powered and connected. Wall-button behaviour depends on the model and switching or scene configuration. Remote access and cloud-based services may be unavailable. Check your specific Matter or KNX setup rather than assuming all functions work offline.

Do I need a neutral wire?

Yes, for the StellarTrack Matter Smart Switch: it needs a neutral wire at the switch (terminals L, L1-L3, N and PE). Many older Australian homes have only active and switched-active wires at the switch, so ask your electrician to check the wall box before you order. If you are building or renovating, ask for a neutral at every switch point during rough-in. The KNX Standard Smart Switch runs on the KNX bus instead.

Can I install a smart switch myself?

No. In Australia, work on mains wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. You can order StellarTrack switches online, have them delivered anywhere in Australia, and have your own electrician fit them. In Melbourne, Arklyfe can supply and install them.

How much LED lighting can one switch control?

The StellarTrack Matter Smart Switch is rated for 200 W of LED lighting (or 400 W incandescent) per circuit. A 1-button switch controls one circuit, a 2-button switch two, and the 4, 6 and 8-button switches three; the extra buttons work as scene buttons. It is SAA/RCM approved under GMA-528353-EA.
